The Vines - Ellenbrook - Stableford
A big field of 26 members and 1 guest made the trek out the The Vines. Contrary to Captain Scott's exhalations, scores were not low with only our winner today shooting his handicap. I played the course 3 weeks ago when it had just been freshly cored and sanded. The greens were much improved, but still a bit bumpy and many in our group found in difficult to get a true roll. Mainly playing break that simply wasn't there due to the fuzzy greens.
After a relatively slow start, Ryan got on a roll a run of 3 and 4 pointers to rack up 20 points on the front nine. Closely followed by myself on 19 playing well despite not much golf this year.
After the wide open front nine, things tighten up on the back and nearly everyone's scores fell away. Well everyone except Jack. After wiping the three of the first four holes, he then played some splendid golf to be one under his handicap from that point on. Dropping a nice birdie putt on the last to finish third on 33 points.
Ryan was scoring consistently with only one wipe, a bunch of three pointers and a four pointer. He finished well getting 7 points on his last three holes to be leader in the clubhouse with 36 points.
I had a poor start to the back nine with three ones, but then clicked back into gear only to be halted on the 17th by a plugged lie under a bunker lip resulting in a double bogey.
This left me 1 point behind Ryan, needing to birdie the 18th to tie and win on a count back. On the green for two but 35 metres from the hole. I hit it as hard as I could but still couldn't get it there and three putted to finish second.
As this was a Stableford game, I thought it would be interesting to have the side game as a team best ball Stableford. You can check out the full results in Gamebook. It was a close contest with group 3 (Lawrie Gibson, Basil, Lui, Stafford) scoring 45 points winning on a countback from group 6 (Mike Patton, Jack Wagner, Dave Ovel, Matt Gibson)
Group 6 would have done better, but one of our members had a self described shit round, didn't contribute much and subsequently medicated at home with a nice bottle of red.
