Nigel blitzes field at Medal of Medals

Updated: Oct 25, 2020

Collier - Monthly Medal - Stroke

Final installment of Monthly Medal and Golden Putter this week, which of course means Craig's favourite format ... Stroke. And being the last Monthly Medal it was also Medal of Medals.

There were only 6 of the 8 MM contenders in the field this week. Jamie F's plan for the weekend involved a brain cell alcohol bombardment watching the AFL grand final, so golf was never going to get a look in. And I'm not sure why Scott R couldn't attend.

Nigel picked a good day to play the best game of his life, carding a gross 82 net 63 to be 10 shots clear of his nearest challenger.

Rob Mizen and Mike Patton shot themselves out of the proceedings early in the round.

Not sure what Pete's story was but there must have been some uglies to offset the birdie on (Lake 5?).

Craig turned a few strokes over handicap but then began to struggle with his ball striking and fell away as well. Mike Newman was just behind Nigel at the turn but was unable to hang on as Nigel turned on the afterburners on the back 9.

Can you say 1 stroke extra exceptional round handicap reduction? Had Nigel been one shot better it would have been two. But in the end, it still resulted in a 2.3 stroke chop to his GA handicap.

Medal of Medal scores:

Nigel Smith (63)

Mike Newman (73)

Pete Tallon (76)

Craig Markham (78)

Rob Mizen (79)

Mike Patton (84)

To round out the podium places, Lui put together a solid net 69 with Dave Ovel continuing his form turnaround with a net 73 to get back under his soft cap zone.

Also nice to see Dennis back, although it probably wasn't the return his envisaged with his net 90 securing NAGA today.

Today was also the final round of Golden Putter. It was a tight race at the top with Gary Hammond and Craig Markham tied going into the round. And they were tied again at the end of the round, with both knocking 4 strokes on their total. Gary rued a couple of three putts and Craig and a bunch of putts of various lengths that refused to drop.

It was a busy day on the links, as there was also the Match Play semi-final today between Dave Ovel and Steve Hooper. Steve didn't have his best day and Dave hit some solid shots as evidenced by his two NTP's with Dave winning 6 and 5.

Dave will now face Leigh Harris in the Match play final.

And last but not least, a warm welcome to visitor Josh Woodward who I believe is considering joining. HIs net 68 today would have gotten him on the podium.
