Collier - Lake Island - Stableford
Early arrivals for the 6:40 tee time were greeted with intermittent showers. Nothing new this year. Like most rounds after a major the field was slightly reduced. With 17 members and one guest (Will Lyon).
Welcome back to Ian Havenstein, who returned early from his annual Broome vacation to welcome his first grandchild into the world. Congrats Ian. Ian remarked that today was his first round of golf without a cart since February. Tough life for some. :) Ian was hitting the ball better than he scored and deserved better than 28 points. The putter wasn't playing nicely today. Similarly, Peter Fitz had no luck at all on the greens today, with probably 8 or 10 putts burning the cup but refusing to drop.
Lui was ticking along nicely with a string of 2 and 3 point holes for 19 points in 8 holes, but then the double bogey train started and could only muster 16 on the back to miss out on a podium finish today.
Myself well I had the driver going on the front nine and employed bomb and gouge tactics to overpower the Lakes with three birdies to turn square to the card for 22 points. But alas two quick doubles followed and the magic was gone. I then proceeded to hack the ball around for 12 points on the back nine. Hmm, gotta work on that back nine transition.
It seems Heiney fell victim to the same issue, able to only must 14 points on the back to go with a strong 20 on the front. But the Island does play harder than the Lakes, so maybe that's the explanation.
Third place getter Scott had a bit of a dip, but followed his 19 on the front with a solid 17. Gary had no such issues with another strong 20 point finish to take second on a countback.
But no one was close to Matt Gibson today. He said he had played a few more rounds in the last couple of weeks and it certainly showed in the results today. Three birdies, with back to back birds on Island 5 and 6. Nice one! And he had the putter going as well, so it was always going to be his day. 40 points with 2 wipes shows some real potential to improve well. Hopefully, you'll join the single digit handicap club soon. Well done on your first win of the year Matt!
