Jack's great round secures Memorial Cup

Updated: Aug 27, 2021

Collier - Memorial Cup - Stableford

Today's major round 28 ' The Memorial Cup' saw one of our largest turnouts of the season, with seven full groups playing and great to see each round played at a good pace by all groups, maybe it was the great weather. Adding to the excitement of today's play was the battle as seen on Gamebook for top spot with the lead changing throughout the back nine.

Stafford came ready to play turning the first nine 'Island' with a marvelous 23 Stableford points only to fall away with a series of one pointers that brought him back to the field to finish with a respectable 37 and taking out third position overall.

Gary H was back in fine form and was once again up for the challenge and played well to finish with a good score of 39 to take out the first losers spot of second behind the legend Jack Wagner who finished with the marvelous score of 42 Stableford points to takeout a well deserved top spot on the podium. It was great to see the club spirit show through as Jack entered the club room to the cheers and applause of his fellow players recognising his marvelous play. Considering he played off a nine handicap he completed a great round of golf.

Really great golf by all three podium finishes.

In additional news three matchplays were played out with Matt Gibson defeating Lawrie Gibson, but really when someone can hit a ball over 300 meters to win long drive A does any opponent stand a chance of winning? ( I have to pack a cut lunch just to travel that far) Well done Matt on the win and especially that incredible drive straight down the centre to leave an eighty meter chip to the green. (looks like I get to play you next please leave the driver at home).

Brenton defeating Lui by one hole in a very close Matchplay, well done Brenton and the Matchplay between Mark Ellis and Josh saw Josh improve on his last week's game by 100% but he still unfortunately lost to the prowess of Mark's back nine play and his great putting. Josh being the good sport that he is managed to take out NAGA for the second week running, but still managed to smile.

Unlike the great Sergio Garcia who chose to climb a tree to take his next shot our local great Craig M decided to take an unplayable because his ball refused to drop out of a tree.( you'll never win Craig if you chose to take the easy way out)hahaha

This week's major was generously sponsored by Peter Fitzpatrick, a big thank you goes out for all of your support.

Also this week we had a change to our putt off comp to include more players and boost the club balance for our traditional end of year dinner. A big thank you to all who supported the new format . There was a champion on the day in Tony Calder taking out all of the prize money $280.00 single handedly, maybe that third beer steadied the nerves. I hope he bought Heiney a beer considering he bought him in for a putt. Tony being a true club man generously donated half of his winnings straight back into the kitty/pool for next week's putt off. Cheers Tony!

A big thank you to David O for taking over the formalities so professionally today in the absence of our Captain Scotty and VC Jamie.

(MP)

Good to see Robin Dalby back and managed to shake off just enough rust to narrowly avoid NAGA on a count forward from Josh.

Winners

1st: Jack Wagner (42)

2nd: Rob Mathias (39)

3rd: Stafford Mellowship (37)

NAGA: Josh Woodward (18)
