Collier - Captains Trophy - Stableford

This week was the 4th major of the year, the Captains Trophy with a second round matchplay on the side between Stafford Mellowship and Dave Ovel. This matchplay was one of the more exciting ones to witness in recent memory as Dave was giving away 14 shots and Stafford was coming off a win at Wanneroo. On the first nine Dave could do no wrong with long straight drives and brilliant approaches. He basically had tap in Pars for the first 6 holes however this only equated to a lead of 2 up and Stafford held in there after a couple of shaky drives but always recovered well. At the turn 2 up and only 3 over the card wasn’t enough of a lead as the handicap factor came into the equation and Stafford had hit his straps, paring most holes with the odd bogey. Dave had some great pressure chips to save par, but par wasn’t enough on the closing holes. It’s a bitter pill to swallow to lose holes with tap in pars or needing birdies to half a hole. All credit to Stafford though he finished the nine with 24 points which included a wipe and 43 overall with two wipes and two one pointers. He sank some pressure putts and generally his drives and approaches were on the money. To put it into perspective how well Stafford played, basically anyone on a handicap of 10 would have Par the course to win. Well done Stafford on a great round and keeping in the game while weathering a par storm early.

In the other groups, playing just as well was Dave “The Pirate “ who had the sneaky long game working and smooth style enabling him to generate a great score and rocket him up the Masters Jacket list. Mikes pre game practice did the trick again as he came in 3rd spot with a great score that would win most weeks. His drive was on the Island 1st was one of the longest we have seen and with a change in job situations soon he will be amongst the winners on a regular basis at the back end of the season.
