The major of the year, the ‘Summer Cup’ was played in a fitting location, Seaview, across from the iconic Cottesloe Beach. Always a tricky course with high winds and small greens and on this day, many people walking through the course on their way to view the Sculptures by the Sea.
The Easterly breeze made things a little interesting with a few very close calls along the adjacent roadways. The course was in good condition aside from few birds scratching on a couple of greens. Everyone had a story that was enough to ‘break your heart’. Pin high next to the green for two and wiping the hole was the most common theme.
Laurie had the worst of those when he wiped the last and then came second on a count back and Rob whom on 33 points with a hole to go somehow lost his ball off the tee didn’t hit a provisional and ended up talking a wipe . . Fast becoming a major specialist Ryan took home his 3rd major in 12 months with a composed game. No one played to their handicap which was interesting.
The bravery award goes to Dave Ovel whom was in hospital overnight suffering migraine headache type symptoms and left it to play, unfortunately after 9 holes had to leave. Nice try though on a course he usually does very well.
Heiney again had a great back 9 of 19 points to come through for 3rd place after stopping with the safe stuff and using the driver on every hole possible. Much to the amusement of our captain, Hammo was very relieved to miss out on the NAGA on a count back, or count forward with 22 points.
It was the first official game for new member Peter Fitzpatrick, welcome aboard Pete! And the third cards for Marc Ellis and Ricky Du-Toit whom filled in membership nomination applications at the end of the round. We also welcomed Scott Macmillan and John Morris with potential membership in mind in the near future.
