A cool cloudy start created great conditions for golf but, as the cloud burnt off, warm sun and uncomfortable humidity set in just as we approached heart attack hill on the back nine. Recently sanded greens played havoc with some players, putts often falling short of the mark. And it was a long journey playing off the blue markers!
Steve “Gypsy” Heron (his current abode a caravan; his future – much travel) book ended a front nine (of mostly bogeys and six 3 point holes) with 2 wipes but still managed 20 points. His gutsy, punishing drives and trade mark dancing putts were a feature in a display courageous enough to win the day from a fast finishing Paul Heine.
Heiney struck trouble over some opening holes but settled into a fine rhythm, playing the back nine with a creditable 44 off-the-stick for 20 points including a mighty wallop to take out the B grade long drive.
The golfing skills of Garth Ziegler are something to admire when he’s on song. After some wayward shots on the outward nine, he settled under coach Dalby, firing off a barrage of powerful drives, long accurate irons and solid putts to complete a very fine 40 off-the-stick for 20 points (popular number that).
Craig had a good round with some great ball striking, long straight drives and long irons into the greens, none better than the NTP on the par 3 14th finishing a foot short of the hole, however with a couple of wipes with some bunker issues and a few one pointers he came 4th with 32 points in which Hammo described as the best 32 he has seen in a long while.
In other news there was a early nomination in the Dipstick award as Baz (driving) Rob (passenger) turned up at Rockingham Golf Club in stead of Kwinana ( wrong course same crime rate though !), so running late and quick call to make sure they were right to go in the final group , Rob suggested they stop at Macca on the way for coffee .short answer ….No . Someone does this every year so I am sure there will be something more Dipstick worthy in the near future.
